When the electronic control module (the computer) sends the signal to the ignition control, the voltage is released from the coil pack through the spark plug cables to the spark plug. Whenever the combustion process is started, the coil pack builds up the energy, as much as 50,000 to 75,000 Volts. When creating a spark at the spark plug, the fire must initiate from a high voltage supply, so as much fuel as possible burns in the cylinder. Coil packs usually create a better spark, which in turn produces better combustion and horsepower in a s engine. Generally speaking, coil packs are much more reliable than distributors, because there are no moving parts and because they fire much less often than a distributor. It is an electronically controlled pack of ignition coils regulated by the s computer and is used to create the spark for each engine cylinder's spark plug. I have heard 3,5,10 methods and 12v results and so on but I havent been able to identify any step by steps on how to test and see if the bike results match the expected specs for that bike.Replaces the distributor. I really dont want to have to tear into the entire wiring harness just to find out it was something else quite simple separate from the main wiring harness.Ĭan someone please help with the appropriate testing methods to identify i am getting the right power to those wires? So I have narrowed it to the wires leading back the harness. Proved that the "bad Coil" is actually good. I took the good coil and tested it on the bad wires and vice versa. When I hit the starter it charged a bit but I only got readings on the 2k setting at like. I plugged my mutlimeter set to 200ohms & 2k ohms, into the red wire and black wire coming from the wiring harness that power the coils. I went out last night and ran a couple quick tests. I Love this bike and at this point in time im ready to thrown in the towel and buy something new, AND I NEVER give up on a project. I know this is a ton of info and I hope it is not too much but also that it is enough.Īny additional help will be GREATLY appreciated. I read on another Vulcan Forum here that I can just wire up one of the staters and the bike would still fire with a very small potential of charging issues.Īnyway they seem unrelated because the issue seemingly got worse after removing and replacing the coil. The 99VN1500E had one stater, the New Nomad motor is equipped with 2. The only additional thing that I believe is unrelated however, it seems it could be. I would love to avoid tearing into the main wiring harness on a goose chase but I will if necessary. I have had a ton of experience with rebuilding old bikes wiring harnesses from scratch and chasing poor connections and what not but this one has me stumped. I would love some additional insight on extra troubleshooting. I'm trying to test for power from the wires from the harness to the coils, however I am getting nothing from either. I very possibly could be doing something wrong. I am not especially versed with the additional testing with a multimeter. when testing the resistance from terminal to spark plug boot, I am not getting any reading, on either pack even though one functions correctly. Replaced coil pack with known tested second hand coil pack and SAME ISSUE. Replaced Coil pack rewired everything appropriately.Based on some research this is correct for the 99VN1500E? Checked resistance from terminals reading showed 2.5 Ohms.Removed seemingly affected coil pack to inspect for visible issues to the wires/boots/terminals etc. checked for spark with plug removed and inserted in the boot, grounded against the head.I tried to get the thing fired up and identified that I was not getting spark to the the right side front cylinder. Swapped the motor with a 2000 VN1500 Nomad (Carb'd) and everything went as planned with the swap. Truth be told, just as much my fault for not keeping a closer eye on the oil levels, but it never leaked a drop and had no other indication of the oil loss. 1999 VN1500 E (Carb'd), Blew the stock motor due to previous owners neglect in telling me how much oil it was burning.
